Self expression allows people to distinguish themselves from others, whether you express yourself  through art, music, dance, writing, fashion or anything else. It’s a great way to enjoy, heal and communicate. 

This week we have the wonderful Musician July Jones who gives us an insight into the way she expresses herself through her music.

 Meet July Jones

Self-expression allows people to distinguish themselves from others, to reflect their own beliefs and needs. What does your fashion (including your tattoos ) express about your beliefs and needs ?

I love clothes and visual art. I see music in colors and pictures and I think clothes are an extension of who I am as a musician. Every time I write a song for my project I know exactly what I want it to look like, so I express that through tattoos, or things that I wear.

 Do you remember the first song you wrote ? If yes what inspired it ?

Yes, that’s a dark one. I wrote it at 14 about my stepmom who attempted to commit suicide, it was called She. It was really raw and beautiful.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you ?

I think the biggest misconception people have is that I’m cold, sometimes some people write to me that they were to scared to talk to me. And the reality is that I absolutely love human beings and I’d chat to everyone for hours if I could.

Who’s your celebrity icon ?

I don’t have one specific icon. I am inspired by a lot of different elements I see and hear, there is not one person in the world who I can point at and say I would like to be them, because I just want to develop myself. But of course there are a lot of artists that inspire me, Charli XCX with her fearless futuristic sound, Madonna with her incredible visual transitions, Banks, FKA Twigs, both amazing visual and musical artists, Halsey, Marilyn Monroe, Lorde and the list goes on.

What does the Red theme represent in your music videos ?

Red represents so many different emotions, from anger, romance, vulnerability, it has a big spectrum and I love the idea of that. It’s really present in my socials at the moment but I’m not limiting myself to the color.

 

You mentioned that “Liar Liar” was inspired by the amount of dream sellers in the industry. How can you tell the difference between someone that is genuine and a dream seller ?

With time, you just have to trust your gut and trust people and see whether it works out or not.

Can you describe the feeling you get when you perform your songs live ?

It’s the reason I live for. I live for the moment on stage with people knowing my songs and enjoying the experience.

What advice would you give to a person from the LGBT community that is being told to confirm to a life that doesn’t represent them ? 

You can not change who you are, live to your full potential and love yourself, if other people tell you different try to distance yourself and give them time.

What do you want your legacy to be?

If I think so far in advance it gives me anxiety, I just want bring as much music in the world that I can, music people love, cry and dance to.
